My reflection on Psalm 23:4 this November 1
November 1 always gives me a reason to pause and reflect. It's a day when we remember people who were once part of our lives but are no longer physically with us. We visit cemeteries, look at old photographs, share stories, and remember moments we wish we could experience one more time.
It also reminds me how unpredictable and fragile life is. We often get caught up in our daily routines, responsibilities, plans, and ambitions that we sometimes forget how precious each day really is. We assume there will always be another opportunity, another conversation, or another moment together. But the reality is, life doesn't always give us that assurance.
A Verse That Feels Different Today
This brings me to Psalm 23:4:
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
I've read this verse many times, but it feels different when I reflect on it during days like this.
What stands out to me is that David never said he would be spared from walking through dark valleys. He knew that fear, danger, and uncertainty were part of the journey. Yet, he was confident because he knew who was walking with him.
When Life Reminds Me I'm Not in Control
I've had my own moments when life reminded me that I'm not in control of everything. Moments when circumstances don't go as planned, when the future feels uncertain, and when I realize how limited our time here really is. Sometimes, all I can do is pray, trust God, and take another step.
And perhaps that's what I need to be reminded of: I don't have to understand everything to trust the One who is leading me.
Loving the People Who Are Still Here
This November 1, while remembering those who have gone before us, I also want to be more intentional about appreciating the people who are still here. To spend more time with them, express gratitude, forgive, and love while we have the opportunity.
More importantly, I am reminded that our hope is not found in how long we get to live or how much we accomplish, but in Jesus Christ, who has overcome death. Our earthly journey is temporary, but His promises are eternal.
I Am Not Walking Alone
I don't know what tomorrow holds, and I don't know what valleys I may still have to walk through. But one thing I want to keep reminding myself of is this: I am not walking alone.
The valley may be dark, the journey may be uncertain, but my Shepherd is with me. And that is enough reason to keep walking.
A Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of life and for every person You have allowed me to share it with. Teach me to cherish each day, love people genuinely, and trust You even when I cannot see what's ahead. Remind me that whatever valley I may face, Your presence will always be my comfort. Amen.
