Every February, the world celebrates Valentine’s Day (for this blog post, I’ll call it Heart’s Day), a season filled with flowers, chocolates, romantic messages, and grand gestures of affection.

Love is one of the most powerful forces in the world. We feel it in friendships, family relationships, romance, and even in simple acts of kindness from strangers. Yet the Bible reveals that beyond every human expression of love stands a greater, deeper, and unchanging love—God’s love.
To better understand this, let’s explore the different kinds of love often discussed in Scripture and how they point us to the greatest love of all… Agape.
Understanding the Different Types of Love
The Bible helps us understand love through different expressions:

1. Phileo – Friendship Love
This is the love shared between friends—loyal, caring, and supportive. We experience phileo when people stand beside us in both joyful and difficult moments.
2. Eros – Romantic Love
This is romantic or marital love. It is beautiful and part of God’s design for relationships, yet it often depends on emotions and circumstances, which can sometimes change.
3. Agape – God’s Unconditional Love
Above all is Agape, the highest form of love. Agape love is unconditional, sacrificial, and given even when it is undeserved. This is the love God shows to every person.
While Heart’s Day often highlights eros, the Bible invites us to focus on Agape—the love that never fails.
Agape Love

The clearest picture of God’s love is found in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:8 says:
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God did not wait for us to become perfect before loving us. He loved us at our weakest, our most broken, and our most undeserving. That is Agape love—a love that gives everything for the sake of others.
Celebrating Heart’s Day with God at the Center
This Heart’s Day, we can move from focusing only on worldly expressions of love to reflecting God’s love in practical ways:
1. Receive God’s love personally.
Remember that you are deeply loved by God, whether you are single, married, or in any season of life.
2. Show sacrificial love.
Encourage someone who feels forgotten, help someone in need, or forgive someone who has hurt you.
3. Love beyond romance.
Heart’s Day is not only for couples—it is an opportunity to show love to family, friends, church members, and even strangers.
4. Reflect Christ’s love daily.
Let your kindness, patience, and generosity remind people that God’s love is real and active.
Final Reflection
Flowers will fade, chocolates will be eaten, and romantic celebrations will eventually pass. But God’s love remains forever.

This Heart’s Day, may we remember that the greatest love story ever told is not found in greeting cards—it is found at the cross, where Jesus gave His life so we could experience everlasting love.
