Every February, the world celebrates Valentine’s Day (for this post, I’ll call it Heart’s Day), a season filled with flowers, chocolates, romantic messages, and grand gestures of affection. While these expressions of love are meaningful, they point to something even greater: the unconditional love that comes from God.

Love is one of the most powerful forces in the world. We experience it through friendships, family relationships, romance, and even simple acts of kindness from strangers. Yet Scripture reminds us that beyond every human expression of love stands a deeper, unchanging love—God’s unconditional love.
Understanding the Different Expressions of Love
The Bible helps us see that love is expressed in different ways:

1. Phileo – Friendship Love
This is the love shared between friends—loyal, caring, and supportive. It is the kind of love that stands beside us in both joyful and difficult moments.
2. Eros – Romantic Love
This refers to romantic or marital love. It is beautiful and part of God’s design, yet it often depends on emotions and circumstances, which can change over time.
3. Agape – God’s Unconditional Love
Above all is Agape, the highest form of love—unconditional, sacrificial, and freely given even when it is undeserved. This is the love God shows to every person, in ways we sometimes overlook:
- He pursues us relentlessly. Even when we turn away or ignore Him, God’s love never abandons us.
- He heals the brokenhearted. Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
- He forgives endlessly. No matter how many times we fail, God offers forgiveness and restores us.
- He provides for our needs. Matthew 6:26 reminds us that God cares for the birds of the air—how much more does He care for us!
- He sacrifices for us. The ultimate expression of God’s love is seen in Jesus Christ, who gave His life so we could be reconciled to God.
While Heart’s Day often highlights romantic love, Scripture invites us to focus on Agape—the love that never fails, never fades, and never depends on us being perfect.
The Greatest Picture of Love

Romans 5:8 reminds us:
“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God did not wait for us to become perfect before loving us. He loved us at our weakest, our most broken, and our most undeserving. That is Agape love—a love that gives everything for the sake of others.
This love is personal, intimate, and active in our daily lives. It comforts us in sorrow, strengthens us in trials, encourages us in weakness, and lifts us when we are weary. It is a love that sees beyond mistakes, beyond status, and beyond circumstances.
Celebrating Heart’s Day with God at the Center
This Heart’s Day, we can move beyond focusing only on worldly expressions of love and instead reflect God’s love in meaningful ways:
- Receive God’s love personally.
Remember that you are deeply loved by God, whether you are single, married, or in any season of life. - Show sacrificial love.
Encourage someone who feels forgotten, help someone in need, or forgive someone who has hurt you. - Love beyond romance.
Heart’s Day is not only for couples—it is an opportunity to show love to family, friends, church members, and even strangers. - Reflect Christ’s love daily.
Let your kindness, patience, and generosity remind people that God’s love is real and active.
Remember His Great Love
Flowers will fade, chocolates will be eaten, and celebrations will eventually pass—but God’s love remains forever.

This Heart’s Day, may we remember that the greatest love story ever told is not found in greeting cards or grand romantic gestures. It is found at the cross, where Christ gave His life so we could experience a love that never ends—a love that pursues, forgives, heals, and gives endlessly.
